EVENTS

There are countless events! Don't be shy and try them all out! All upcoming events will be notified through email and the Updates section of the website.

Here are a few types of contests in JCL:

Olympika (Sporting Events): track and field, tennis, swimming, gladiator fights (seriously) & much more

Graphic Arts: arts in all kinds of categores, including black and white, watercolor, painting, sculpture, scrapbooking, mixed media, video-editing and more!

Creative Arts: Latin declamation, Latin sight-reading, English oratory, story-writing, original Latin poetry, original Latin Prose, costume design and more!

Certamen & Academic TestingFor all you academics out there, Certamen is a great and competitive game. A bit like a cross between Quiz Bowl and jeopardy, teams compete against each other answering questions about Classical history, language, mythology and culture. There are also many tests that can be taken at JCL events, with the possibility of earing medals and ribbons if you do well. If you are interested in doing certamen, talk to Ms. Moguel & Mr. Bartoloma if you are in Latin 1/2 and 1, to Mr. Brownell if you are in Latin 2, to Ms. Hausey if you are in Latin 3+.

Whole-School Spirit: Includes chariot racing, gladiator fights, catapults, toga parade, skits.

Leadership: If you're interested in JCL leadership and strongly believe in your ability to help lead JCL in bigger and better directions, there are many leadership opportunities available. BLS JCL has its own school board and Massachusetts JCL has a State Board. State Board members are eligible to run for the National JCL Board. JCL is primarily student-run, so as a board member, one has a lot of responsibility to the club.

In addition to competition, there are also a lot of fun and relaxing events through the school year.

Community Service:  BLSJCL has monthly community service events such as UNICEF and Caroling at the Boston Health Center. Notification about these events will be sent out to registered members a few days before each event. These events are usually very fun, and you also get volunteer hours!
